There was abound to be some change between the terminology used in the Japanese version of Yugioh Zexal compared to the American version. Here are some of the crucial changes:

  1. Exceed Monsters are now Xyz monsters and overlay units (or exceed material monsters) are known as Xyz material monsters.
  2. No.39 Aspiring Emperor Hope has become No.39 Utopia (I have no idea why).
  3. No.17 Revise Dragon has become No.17 Leviath Dragon.

    that’s weird. Why not just keep the name?

  2. @nader

    I don’t know. The U.S. versions are usually different but I just cannot comprehend the change of Aspiring Emperor Hope to Utopia. First of all, Utopia is surrounding, not a person.

    I don’t mind the monster names all that much, (though they’re probably changing hope’s name to Utopia for the same reason Salvation Dragon became Majestic Dragon). what gets me boiled is that they’re changing a perfectly good name like Exceed Monsters to Xyz monsters. I mean what the crap, Exceed fits better than calling them X-Y-Z monsters, that would confuse the dimmest of rookies into thinking they good with the V-Z archetype, least I think so.

    guess what guys! We have our first very good xyz coming soon! It’s called Evolkaiser Ragia. Check it out!

  5. @Rocket

    Exactly! Exceed is a fine name; to replace it with XYZ can not only be confusing, but come on, XYZ? That’s such a lame name…

    @blogger

    Exactly, They kept Synchro, and at first that term confused me, but it at least made sense, so why drop Exceed for xyz?

    I was reading on of my favorite FanFiction stories today, and came across this in the author’s note.

    “Someone pointed me to an article by Konami in which they claimed that “Exceed” was actually the wrong translation of the term.

    Xyz Monsters are supposed to be interdimensional beings made of antimatter, according to the lore of the anime, and the letters X, Y, and Z are spatial coordinates. So “Xyz Monster” is the correct term, whether we are using OCG or TCG.”

    Putting it that way makes it make sense then
