Psychic Monsters

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Psychic monsters are a pretty old monster type, however I have recently had an interest in them!  Yesterday, I was going to get the new Mockingjay book at the library when I saw some guys dueling at the youth section of the library. One of the duelists was using a Blackwing deck (surprise, surprise) and the other was using a Psychic deck! The duel had  just begun and they let me watch the match. I thought the Blackwing deck would just destroy the Psychic but it was a surprisingly close duel (with Blackwings being the victor). I’ve been fascinated with Psychic ever since yesterday!

Psychic are a cool archetype that focus on a variety of things such as swarming, burn damage, and especially life point manipulation. Because of their various strengths, Psychic monsters are very hard to predict and can cause havoc with their different effects (as I saw first hand in the duel against the Blackwings). A lot of Psychic monsters make the user take damage therefore it’s recommended that Psychic duelists have cards like Prime Material Dragon and Rainbow Life. Another good thing about Psychic monsters is that many of them are level four and below monsters, thus it’s easy to summon them and facilitate combos.

Psychics have a lot of good qualities about them, however my favorite aspect about the Psychics is their strong synchro monsters. Not only do Psychic monsters have strong synchros, they have a lot of them as well: Thought Ruler Archfiend, Hyper Psychic Blaster, Psychic Lifetrancer, Psychic Nightmare, Psychic Android, and then there are other other OCG synchros as well. Then, if you count Ultimate Axon Kicker and Hyper Pyschic Blaster A.M., there are A LOT of beatdown Psychic monsters.

Psychic monsters may not be the most popular monster type, and a Psychic deck may not be a Tier 1 deck, however Psychic monsters are still a type in development and I think that once they have enough support, they can be a deadly group of monsters. Even now, a full Psychic deck can compete with the best of them! I want to see a duel between Aliens and Psychics: Out of space creatures VS Mutants!

Emerging Archetypes, A Duelist Revolution!

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

yu-gi-oh-duelist-revolutionWith the TCG releases of Hidden Arsenal packs 1, 2, and recent Duel Terminal packs, we were introduced to several new archetypes such as Naturia, Flamevell, and Ice Barrier monsters. Recently, a new mainstream booster pack, the Duelist Revolution, was released as well and along with its release Duelist Revolution brought more support for these emerging archetypes. The Duelist Revolution actually did start a Duelist Revolution!  After skimming through the spoiler list, I found a bunch of cards that would be really useful for any deck. Cards like Pot of Duality, Synchro Fusionist, and my favorite, Chivalry. Duelist Revolution is one of the strongest packs I have seen for a while. Plus, it has long-awaited support and additions for upcoming archetypes. Duelist Revolution has shaped so many emerging archetypes and it could lead to a whole new twist in Yugioh.

When I say whole new twist, I don’t mean a change in rules or play style. A majority of players are still old school, especially the older duelists. However, Duelist Revolution has helped turn semi-archetypes (Ice Barrier, Naturia, etc…) into full, actual archetypes with a good amount of cards and decent support. Now, due to Duelist Revolution, many of these archetypes are ready to be used in tournaments. Thus, duelists have the option to choose to use a different archetype out of the vast majority of new archetypes. They don’t have to use the same old Infernities, or Elemental Heroes anymore thanks to Duelist Revolution, which has improved so many new archetypes.

Out of the new archetypes in Yugioh, I feel that Naturia will be the strongest. Although some of their cards OCG, Naturia has a great balance of power and efficiency. They are one of the fastest decks out there, and unless their combos are quickly stopped, they will do serious damage. Naturias also have great monsters such as Naturia Barkion (OCG), Naturia Beast, and Naturia Bambooshoot who has a great ability to negate your opponent from playing spell or trap cards if it is summoned by tributing a Naturia monster. Ice Barriers, another emerging archetype, are another popular archetype. They focus mainly on field advantage, and then beating down the opponent. Some of my favorite Ice Barrier monsters include Brionac, Trishula, and General Grunard (OCG).

Duelist Revolution, I think, has brought a type of Golden Age in the modern, 3rd generation Yugioh timeline. It has introduced the world to MANY new archetypes. Duelist Revolution is a good booster pack overall as well. It has a great traps and spells, and a good set of monsters as well (especially the new, Dragon Draco-Equiste!). This is a booster pack I would recommend any player to buy, old school or new school alike.

The Number One Monster Archetype in Yugioh

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Pretty obvious, they are the best as of now….

1. X-Sabers

Strengths

X-Sabers became immensely popular the day Ancient Prophecy came out. X-Sabers are another versatile archetype that have a great amount of battle strategies. Though they are mainly focused on swarming, a lot of X-Saber have effects that revolve around things such as discarding cards from your foe’s hand.  X-Sabers have amazing combos, (a notable one is known as the Faultrolls Loop, facilitated by two XX-Saber Faultrolls and XX-Saber Ragigura). X-Sabers have strong spell and trap cards, a notable and powerful support card is Gottam’s Emergency Call. They are a premier archetype and with more support and mastery, could be an even more destructive archetype.

Weaknesses

The most notable weakness that X-Sabers have is lack of support. Though their spells and traps may be strong, they still need more spell and trap card support if they want to remain number one. Also, some X-Sabers require others to be on the field, slowing the deck down a bit. Other than that, X-Sabers are a near-perfect archetype. With more X-Saber oriented cards being released in Duelist Revolution and Starstrike Blast, they will be an unstoppable force.

Card of the Week

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Well, today will be the last and final Card of the Week post, for come August, I will write a weekly Monster Card Comparison. That post will compare two different monsters and judge which monster is better based on stats, effects, usefulness, artwork, etc… Anyways, the last card of the week is card that I found in my locker during high school orientation this week. It was pretty funny that someone would put something in my locker before school even began, but what was funnier was that it was such an awesome card!

yu-gi-oh-savage-colosseumCard of the Week 7/30/10: Savage Colosseum

Savage Colosseum is one of those cards that you have to be extremely careful when using, but if used right, can be dangerous for your opponent. Magical Colosseum is a field spell that requires every monster (who is able) on the turn player’s side of the field, to attack. If a monster doesn’t attack (by remaining in defense position, Block Attack, etc…) This card is a great to destroy tuners and other weak/crucial monsters. On top of that, the controller gets 300 life points if a monster attacked. Savage Colosseum is a really big help when you’re losing for it has the capability to turn the tides.  The only weakness Savage Colosseum has is that it is pretty useless when dueling a high level, beatdown deck…

Well that wraps up the final card of the week for July and the last card of the week post for this blog. However, you can still vote for who you think should win the card of the month award: Savage Colosseum, Dark Creator, or Mist Wurm!

Top 5 Yugioh Monster Archetypes Part 2

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Here is the second part of the top five Yugioh Monster Archetypes. Hope you like it!

3. Aliens

Strengths

Duffer’s choice of running an Alien deck intrigued me enough to do some more research about the archetype. They are one of the most underrated archetypes, but if you play them right the Aliens can be extremely dangerous. The focus of this archetype is to equip the opponent’s monsters with Alien Counters. Monsters equipped with ‘A-Counters’ are effect in negative ways, for example they lose 300 attack and defense points during battle calculation. Alien monsters are similar to a chess pieces. There are weaker monsters (pawns) that focus on distracting and penetrating through defenses by equipping A-Counters (Alien Dog). Then there are higher-ups (bishops, knights, and castles) that apply damaging effects on the foe’s A-Monsters (Alien Mars). Finally, there are the king and queen, in this archetype, Mystic Fortress Gol’gar and Cosmic Horror Gangi’el (they aren’t Alien monsters but are used in every Alien deck that they are considered to be part of the archetype). What I’m trying to say is that the Aliens are a very structured archetype that utilizes the powers of each and every member of the team. Their functionality makes Aliens an archetype that can destroy opponents with ease.

Weaknesses

Because they were recently being mainstreamed, Aliens don’t have a good amount of support yet. There are some spells and traps that apply only to Aliens (Code A Ruins, Planet Pollutant Virus, etc…) but it’s not a big amount. Because they don’t have a great amount of support, Aliens are very prone in close, low-card situations.

2. Infernities

Strengths

Infernities are one of the star archetypes of the 2010 meta. With the introduction of Kalin Kiryu in Yugioh 5Ds, Konami decided they just had to create Infernity cards due to Kalin’s rise in popularity. Like their winged-beast counterparts the Blackwings,Infernities are pretty good swarming archetype as well. They are a very flexible archetype for their decks can mesh other types of monsters such as the Dark World monsters and (especially) Zombie type monsters. Infernity decks are great for Instant Synchro Summons thanks to cards like Infernity Launcher and Infernity Necromancer. There are a few OTK opportunities in an Infernity deck as well. The biggest reason for the Infernities popularity is the fact they are more powerful when there is little-to-no cards in the user’s hand. Thus, instead of worrying about discarding your cards to the grave, or playing to many spells and traps, having an Infernity deck gives you relief because by doing that, you are just opening a door to more combos and strategies.

Weaknesses

Another deck that would be killed by Consecrated Light. The Infernities have very little spell and trap card support compared to other meta decks. Because they are so reliant on having no hand, cards like Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier and Penguin Soldier could instantly halt a developing Infernity combo. In an Infernity deck, players are too reliant on special summoning Infernity monsters and stocking them in the graveyard. This Infernity characteristic makes it very easy to form an Anti-Infernity deck (a D.D. deck or a deck that revolves around cards like Royal Oppression/Special Hurricane, etc..). Though an Infernity deck is mighty, Infernities are at their full potential when meshed with similar archetypes (zombies, Dark World).

Hope you liked the list! Stay tune for the the strongest monster arcehtype in Yugioh! (Though you’ve probably guessed it anyways…)

Card of the week 7/19/10: Dark Creator

yu-gi-oh-dark-creatorAfter days of wait, I finally located a local game store that hosted unoffical Yugioh duels on the weekends. Obviously, after having created my new Infernity Dark World deck, I had to go in order to test it out. My results were good, but not as good as I had imagined. I won nine duels, but lost two. My first loss had nothing to do with my foe’s deck; I just had a terrible hand. However, the second deck I lost to was actually a pretty nice one. It was similar to the high-leveled beatdown deck that Chris Harbour was describing in his comments. That Yugioh deck consisted of cards that made it easy to pull out strong monsters in order to completely tramp over defenses. It was primarily a dark attribute deck. Some of the cards used was Dark Necrofear, DAD, and Raviel the Lord of Phantasm. However, the card that completely destroyed me was Dark Creator.

Dark Creator is the evil spin-off of the Creator and it can special summon one Dark monster if you remove one from your graveyard. Dark Creator was basically the fascilator of 99% of that duelist’s combos. Though I could fend off some of the beatdown monsters, his tough offense made it difficult for me to create a counter-strategy. His most popular combinations were special summoning Dark Nephythys and using its effect to destroy my spells and traps. Dark Creator also allowed him to later special summon Raviel, which was able to easily win him the duel. Though I still didn’t have a great hand in this duel, his Dark Creator still did most of the damage to me. His Dark Revival deck, and especially the Dark Creator, earned my respect.

Top 5 Yugioh Monster Archetypes Part 1

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

In Yugioh Cards Blog, the discussions about the strongest Yugioh archetypes have getting very popular. Therefore, I decided to write a post on the top 5 archetypes in Yugioh. Before I start, I want to remind you that these are based on TCG deck lists. Here is part 1 of the list.

5. Dark World

Strengths

Though they are heavily looked down upon, Dark World monsters are actually one of the best types of cards to use. They are, in my opinion, the more advanced versions of Blackwings. Dark World monsters revolve around the activation of effects after being discarded. For example; Beiige, Vanguard of the Dark World can be special summoned if it is discarded from your hand by a card effect. The Dark World monsters really punish mill archetypes, and other archetypes that like to discard cards from the foe’s hand; a popular archetype being the X-Sabers. Dark World is also a great swarming archetype especially with effect of Brron, Mad King of the Dark World. The Dark World archetype also goes great with the Infernity archetype, creating a nearly unbeatable deck (I would know, since I used a mixture of Dark World and Infernity and made it to nationals).

Weaknesses

Besides the fact Consecrated Light would kill this deck, the only weakness I noticed in a Dark World deck is that it is hard to function if you don’t draw a card that discards other cards, such as a Morphing Jar. Unless you can activate their effects, Dark World monsters are pretty weak so a lot of the Dark World archetype is based on luck. Plus, Dark World monsters are very against D.D. decks, since they utilize cards like Dimensional Fissure and Macro Cosmos which send monsters out of play rather than the graveyard. Also, Dark World decks can be a bit predictable, so you need to have a strong extra deck.

4. Blackwings

Strengths

One of the best OTK decks around, Blackwing monsters are one of the, if not the most used archetype in Yugioh duels. With their vast swarming capabilities, Blackwings could create obstacles for your opponent early in the turn. Cards like Sirocco the Dawn also help out by improving the attack stat of other Blackwings. One of the most dangerous attributes about Blackwings is how quickly they can create an OTK. Because Blackwings swarm so much, they can quickly create OTK situations or quick-kill situations. The difficulty of preparing for those types of situations makes Blackwing monsters very deadly. Because of their swarming prowess, Blackwings also focus on summoning many synchro monsters.

Weaknesses

Blackwing monsters are a very one-dimensional archetype. Besides the fact they swarm to create OTK situations, they aren’t really capable of doing anything else. Plus, the fact they are all winged-beast, dark attribute monsters, means that you can easily defeat them with Tribe-Infecting virus or Consecrated Light. Also, because Blackwing decks focus on swarming synchros, cards like Gravity Bind make it very difficult for a Blackwing deck to function.

I hoped you guys like part 1 of the Top 5 Yugioh Deck Archetypes, tune in for my next post to see my 3rd and 4th entries, although they are pretty obvious!

Card of the week 7/9/10: Mist Wurm

yu-gi-oh-mist-wurm1My first meeting with a Mist Wurm card was pretty hilarious! Towards the end of my trip to Nepal, my parents and I visited a common goods store to buy some items. In the store, there was a games section as well and it was stocked with merchandise of games like Beyblade, Pokemon, and even Yugioh! There was a special Yusei tin pack in the Yugioh section, and guess what the cover card was? Mist Wurm. However, it wasn’t just any Mist Wurm, it was a poorly made, fake version of the card. The Yugioh sticker at the bottom-right of the card was badly places, the title was in the wrong font, and even the holographic image looked more rough than bright. Though I was bummed out that I lost a chance to acquire a fierce synchro monster, that moment really made my day! Thus, I decided Mist Wurm should be my card of the week.

Mist Wurm is one of the most formidable and rare Yugio synchro monsters around. Though it could be a bit of a hassle to summon due to needing two non-tuner monsters, its stats and effect makes up for it. Not only does Mist Wurm have a dominating 2500 attack points, it also has a solid effect. When it is synchro summoned, you can return up to three cards your opponent controls. That basically guarantees a direct attack opportunity.

Card of the Month: June

Friday, July 9th, 2010

After two weeks of voting, the choice for the card of the month was unanimously Mystic Fortress Gol’gar! It has a great effect, high attack power, and is easy to summon due to being a synchro, so I’m not really surprised that it won.

Card of the week 6/27/10: Gagagigo

Yu-Gi-Oh-GagagigoGagagigo may be an old and forgotten monster, but it was the basis of one of my most popular contests in my blog. Though it doesn’t have an effect, Gagagigo still has 1850 attack so it’s pretty useful in some decks, especially reptilian decks. Gagagigo’s younger self, Gigobyte is one of the best cards to have in a Gravity deck. Because it’s a level one monster, it can be affected by Triangle Power thus making it a powerhouse in a Gravity deck. Gagagigo also has older forms known as Giga Gagagigo and Gogiga Gagagigo. Though it might not have a high efficiency rate, it has a lot of history and is a very significant Yugioh monster.

The three card of the weeks have been selected! Gagagigo, Non Aggression Area, and Cosmic Fortress Gol’gar. Out of these three cards, vote for which one you think deserves to be the card of the month!
