Yugioh Defensive Monsters

Monday, May 31st, 2010

In Yugioh duels, having monsters with a high attack and broken burn effects will not guarantee victory. A simple Mirror Force or Magic Cylinder can break your momentum and change the outcome of the duel instantly. Therefore, just like in basketball or football, every good deck needs a strong defense in order to protect your life points in case of an emergency. I have already talked about Yugioh trap cards and Yugioh spell cards that are a great defensive addition to your deck. In this post, I will talk about key defensive monsters that can stall the duel for you in order to set up a combo to facilitate a come-back.

Sometimes, you’re foe’s just going to overpower you in even simple level four versus level four match-ups (i.e. your foe plays Vorse  Raider and defeats your Nin-Ken Dog). In these type of situations, you need monsters with high defense points; they don’t need to be effect monsters either. Soul Tiger, Giant Soldier of Stone, Destiny Hero Defender, and Gravekeeper’s Guard are all great options for a quick defense. The purpose of these type of monsters are to stall the duel for you so that you can stock up on cards to unleash a quick, or even deadly combo on your opponent. Monsters like Elemental Hero Rampart Blaster and Total Defense Shogun are powerful monsters that can help you in provide defense and offense… at the same time! Those are two key powerhouse, defensive monsters.

Defense isn’t just limited to a monster’s defense points; monsters with defensive effects are helpful as defense monsters as well. One of my favorite defensive monsters is Blast Sphere. Though Blast Sphere has decent stats, it has a great effect. When Blast Sphere is attacked as a set monster, it equips itself onto the attacking monster. Then, in your opponent’s following standby phase, it destroys the monster (along with it’s self) and inflicts damage to your opponent equal to the attack of the monster Blast Sphere equipped itself onto. It’s effect is similar to Reflect Bounder, another great defensive monster.

Of course, defense also means being able to protect yourself from spell and trap cards. Cosmic Fortress Gol’gar is one of those monsters that many people have heard about but deserves to be in the list of top 10 defensive monsters. Not only is it pretty easy to summon (Alien Ammonite’s effect does it for you basically), it has an effect that can send a number of spell and trap cards back to the controller’s hand (this can be your opponent’s trap and spells only!). Plus, for each spell and trap returned this way, you can distribute A counters among any monsters on the field. You can remove two A counters to destroy a card your foe controls. This monster is very much like DAD, but is an unlimited monster! It’s a great addition to any Alien deck!

Defense helps wins any game. Though in Yugioh, defense mostly appears through traps and spells, it is vital that you have some monsters that can produce defense and stall the duel in order for you to set up a combo. There are so many combos you can unleash in a duel if you just have a line of defense in order to protect your life points and stall the match. The monsters I have listed above are some of the best defensive monsters in the game. Perhaps, you all could give them a try in your deck; trust me, you’ll be having a win-streak in no time with defensive monsters.

The Strongest and Easiest Yugioh Monster to Summon Is…

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

(Yeah, I know that I kind of gave it away… sorry!)

Yugioh Tribe Infecting VirusTribe Infecting Virus

Tribe Infecting Virus is possibly the only card that can destroy 99% of the monsters in Yugioh! You can discard a card and destroy a specific type of monster on the field. It’s a great card for defeating players that use type-decks, like Bandit Keith who uses a machine deck. The best part about T.I.B.’s effect is that you can use it over and over again! Plus, it’s only a level four Yugioh monster, so you can summon it in a breeze. It’s ability to destroy virtually any monster in Yugioh is truly unbelievable!

Top 15 Strong and Easy to Summon Monsters Part 3

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Here is part three of the list:

Yugioh Dark Armed Dragon5. Dark Armed Dragon

Dark Armed Dragon is equivalent  to the Lebron James of Yugioh. It’s a great card, very powerful, over-hyped sometimes but a great addition to any deck. Dark Armed Dragon is just too easy play, especially in dark attribute decks (the most commonly used decks in Yugioh). All it takes to summon D.A.D. is to have three dark monsters in your graveyard, which is a simple task which can be made even easier with a Graceful Charity or a Card Destruction. D.A.D. has a pretty sweet effect as well: by removing one dark monster from your graveyard, it can destroy any card on the field. That’s not only a great effect for clearing the field for direct attacks, but you can also use D.A.D’s to get rid of your opponent’s suspicious and dangerous traps. D.A.D. seems like a killer, but it has a big weakness: remove all the dark monsters from your foe’s grave, and it’s mightily weakened. This can be easily done with a Soul Release; that’s why it should become the basis of any Anti-DAD deck.

Yugioh Black Luster Soldier Envoy of the Beginning4. Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning

Black Luster Soldier EOTB is obviously the powerhouse monster of Yugioh. It’s fairly easy to summon; all you have to do is remove a light and dark monster from your graveyard. It can destroy one monster per turn through it’s effect, opening up attacking space for other monsters. When Black Luster Soldier, EOTB destroys a monster, it can attack again. That’s a strong effect considering that it could then wipe out your opponent’s field of monsters. That effect allows  EOTB and the rest if your platoon of monsters to attack your foe directly and deal some serious damage. Just like DAD however, you can easily prevent the summoning of EOTB with cards like Soul Release,

Yugioh Gorz, Emissary of Darkness3. Gorz Emissary of Darkness

Gorz is probably the easiest to summon in this list. All your opponent has to do is deal damage to you; even a dealing a mere 50 life points would cause Gorz to be special summoned. Not only can Gorz, a strong monster with 2700 attack points, arrive to the duel, he would bring this mates token one and token two as well. If your foe inflicts battle damage to you, when Gorz is played you can also summon two tokens with attack and defense equal to the amount of damage taken. Gorz’s tokens are great as tributes, as offensive monsters, and even synchro material monsters for a synchro monster. You could tune a Alien Ammonite with a Gorz token to synchro summon Black Winged Dragon! If your opponent inflicts effect damage to you however, Gorz is still summoned but you deal the same amount of damage you took back to your opponent rather than special summoning tokens. Gorz is just a fantastic card and I’m glad that he is easily findable at your local stores!

Yugioh Stardust Dragon2. Stardust Dragon

Dragons were only known to be the strongest type of monsters but until Tyrant Dragon and Decoy Dragon, I haven’t seen as good of a defensive dragon as Stardust. With 2500 attack points, it can kill you in offense, but with its effect, it can save your butt on the defensive side. If your opponent activates a spell, trap, or monster effect during a crucial moment for you in the duel, no worries. All you have to do is remove Stardust Dragon from play and boom, your foe’s card’s effect is negated and the card is destroyed! The best part is, Stardust Dragon comes back for more at the end of the turn. Unlike EOTB or DAD, it’s very difficult to destroy Stardust Dragon. It’s basically impossible to destroy it by a card effect, and it’s very tough to be beat it in battle. Stardust Dragon is also a synchro monster, making it fairly easy to play as well. This dragon is surely a God.

Top 15 Strong and Easy to Summon Monsters Part 2

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Here is part two of the list:

Yugioh Armed Dragon LV510. Armed Dragon LV5

Armed Dragon is a fabulous card to have in any deck, as long you have Armed Dragon LV3 that is. Compared to its LV7 and LV10, Lv5 may lack in power however simple summoning capabilities make it the best one of the four. All you have to do to summon Armed Dragon LV5 is tribute one monster from your side of the field, or you can tribute A.D. LV3 to special summon LV5 from your deck. As long as you discard a monster with higher attack points than the target, Armed Dragon LV5 can basically destroy any monster your foe has. Plus with its 2400 attack points, Armed Dragon LV5 could clear the field and inflict lots of direct damage to your opponent.

Yugioh Penguin Soldier9. Penguin Soldier

The adorable and cute-looking Penguin Soldier can be a major threat to your opponent. In fact, whenever I play my Yugioh: 7 Trials to Glory video game, I am so paranoid in attacking face-down monsters because I assume that it could be a Penguin Soldier! When Penguin Soldier is flipped, you can return up to two monster cards on the field to the owner’s hand. Penguin Soldier could clear your foe’s field for you to directly attack them. It is such an efficient and easy-to-summon monster.

Yugioh Reflect Bounder8. Reflect Bounder

Reflect Bounder is the monster entity of Magic Cylinder. Not only is it a level four monster (therefore easy to play) but its effect is like a trap card. When attacked, Reflect Bounder “reflects” damage equal to the attack of the attacking monster right back to the opponent. Though Reflect Bounder is destroyed right after using its effect, it can still be a duel-changer. You can think of it like a Magic Cylinder, for its effect is very similar. Plus, with 1700 attack points, Reflect Bounder is also decent in the defensive side as well. A great monster that meshes with any deck.

Yugioh Elemental Hero Wildheart7. Elemental Hero Wildheart

Besides Penguin Soldier, Elemental Hero Wildheart is my favorite monster in Yugioh and for one reason only: it cannot be affected by trap cards. Yep, it can’t be affected, not targeted, affected. If your foe plays a Draining Shield on you or Torrential Tribute, whoops! Elemental Hero Wildheart takes no effect from the traps. Your opponent can only destroy Wildhear by spells (quick spells if it’s your turn), monster effects, or by battle. Let’s face it, monsters are 90% of the time destroyed by traps or by battle. If you equip an Axe of Despair or Malevolent Nuzzler to Wildheart, it’ll be virtually indestructible with 2500/2300 attack points. As soon as a monster is immune to traps, it takes a lot of time to destroy it. That’s why Wildheart, who is one of the few monsters (or the only one) with this ability, is so strong, it had to be high on the list.

Yugioh Brionac Dragon of the Ice Barrier6. Brionac Dragon of the Ice Barrier

Imagine a monster equivalent to a bunch of Penguin Soldiers, the result is Brionac. First of all, Brionac is a synchro monster which means you can either just synchro summon him (which is a simple process) or revive him from the graveyard with a Monster Reborn or a Premature Burial. Brionac has 2300 attack points, making him a strong monster in terms of stats, however I love Brionac because it can basically clear your opponent’s field; literally. You can discard any number of cards to the graveyard to return the same amount of cards on the field to the respective owner’s hand. Plus, you can activate this effect during your foe’s turn as well. He can make the field wide open basically EVERY TURN for direct attacks. What a beast.

Top 15 Strong and Easy to Summon Monsters Part 1

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

I have been posting a lot of stuff about cards to have in a deck, lots of top tens, and many posts about monsters in varying archetypes. I recently got a comment from nader, requesting I write a post about the top 10 monsters who are easy to summon (through their own capabilities), and have strong effects. I could quickly think of some names. So I decided to go with the idea, and I came up with this list! I hope you guys like part 1 of the list!

Strong Fairy Yugioh Majestic Mech Goryu

15. Majestic Mech Goryu

Majestic Mech may be a level eight monster, however you can summon him with only tribute instead of two. Though it will be destroyed on your end phase if you summon it this way, Majestic Mech’s ability ensured it a place on this list. Even though it’ll only last you a turn, Majestic Mech can be used to deal penetration damage on your opponent for its effect is that when it battles with a monster that has lower defense than Majestic Mech’s attack, you can deal damage equal to the difference to your foe. Because Goryu has such a high attack power, that could be a game changing amount of damage. Plus, it’s great for dealing direct even for a turn. All of this for merely one tribute. Sweet

14. Freed the Brave Wanderer

Yugioh Freed the Brave Wanderer

Freed is a great way to obliterate your opponent’s monster defenses. All you have to do is to remove from play to light monsters from you graveyard, and you can destroy one monster on the field. The most abundant monster attributes in the game is dark, and after that, light. So, you should have no trouble using his effect. Freed is a four-star monster, making him easy to play. (Tip: Would be great in a fairy deck)

Strong Monster Yugioh Cyber Dragon13. Cyber Dragon

Cyber Dragon is such an easy monster to special summon. As long as you don’t have any monsters on your side of the field and your foe does, it can easily be played. Cyber Dragon can then be used as tribute for stronger monsters or as another for you to directly attack your opponent with! With 2100 attack points, it can be dangerous powerhouse yet it’s still simple to summon. yu-gi-oh-cyber-dragon

12. Fenrir

Yugioh Fenrir Strong Water

I wouldn’t say Fenrir is as easy to play as the my previous listings, but it isn’t impossible to play either. If you have a sea-serpent, fish, or aqua deck, Fenrir would be a great addition and it’s effect would be easy to facilitate. Fenrir can’t be played unless you remove two water monsters from play (not hard if your using one of the three type of decks listed above). All it has to do is destroy one of your opponent’s monsters and they skip their draw phase. It might not be as good as Yata, but Fenrir can still allow you to achieve a “Fenrir-lock” which is a broken maneuver all by itself. Therefore Fenrir has to come in this list.

Best Dragon Decoy Dragon11. Decoy Dragon

Though it’s only useful in dragon decks, Decoy Dragon is still a very helpful monster. First of all, it’s a level two monster meaning it doesn’t require a tribute to summon. Second, its effect is an easy way to special dragon type monsters. When Decoy Dragon is attacked, the controller can special summon a special summon a level seven or higher monster to your side of the field and switch the target to the special summoned monster. Not only is Decoy Dragon easy to play and has a strong effect, it makes summoning powerful dragons very easy as well.

Cards Everyone Should Have In a Deck

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

There are some cards in Yugioh that have to be, and would benefit the user, if they were their deck. Obviously, that list wouldn’t include many monsters because people usually have theme decks and different type of monsters would just disrupt their dueling style. Still, the road to victory is usually achieved by having a balanced deck as well as a diverse one. So here are some cards that you MUST have in a deck (Note: there are five cards per section):

Spells:

Poison of the Old Man/ (tied with) Lightning Vortex

Rush Recklessly

Fighting Spirit

Mage Power

United We Stand

Traps:

Sakuretsu Armor

Dark Bribe

Mirror Force

Magical Cylinder

Draining Shield

Monsters:

Penguin Soldier

Gravekeeper’s Guard

Cyber Dragon

Man Eater Bug

Mask of Darkness

Yugioh Monster Types Part 2

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

In my last post, I talked about the strongest monster from the first set of Yugioh monster types. Part two will include the monsters from the second set of Yugioh monster types. If there is any disagreement my choice or choices, feel free to comment on what you would have picked differently and why it is better than my choice. (Note: The decisions were made based solely on stats, effect, and how much it would help in its type deck.)

Plant - Tytannial, Princess of Camelias

Psychic - Hyper Psychic Blaster/Assault Mode

Pyro - Volcanic Doomfire

Reptlie - Vennominaga the Deity of Poisonous Snakes

Rock - Earth Giant Gaia Plate

Sea Serpent - Brinonac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier

Spellcaster - Exodias (Obviously) - Amazing Combo: Arcanite Magician or Arcanite Magician AM, Alchemist of Black Spells, and Magical Citadel of Endymion, (optional) Crusader of Endymion. Yugioh Monster Types Part 1

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Though I have written about Yugioh monster types in the past, I wanted to write a post about the strongest from each of the monster types. I think that though we all talk about the strongest monsters in Yugioh, overall, I thought  writing about the strongest monster per type is important because it can be a pathway for people to build their decks out of. I want to thank nader for giving me the idea. (Note: The decisions were made based on stats, effect, and how much it would help in its type deck). Let me know if you agree or disagree with my decisions.

Aqua - Tribe Infecting Virus

Beast - Mosaic Manticore

Beast-Warrior - Gladiator Beast Heraklinos

Dinosaur - Sauropod Brachion

Dragon - Stardust Dragon Assault Mode

Fairy - Neo Parshath, the Sky Paladin

Fiend - Yubels

Fish - Superancient Deepsea King Coelcanth

Insect - Brain Crusher

Machine - Chimeratech Overdragon

Yugioh Cards With the Best Artwork

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

I recently got a comment from nader regarding Yugioh cards with the best artwork. A lot of Yugioh cards have very sterile artwork, such as Dark Magician, Red Eyes Black Dragon, and of course, Kuriboh. I don’t mean to be callous towards the designers of the artwork for those cards, but the designs are just really bad. However, cards like Victoria, Honest, and Athena have some of the most beautiful art designs I have ever seen! However, though those three monsters are my top three, I would say Athena’s artwork is the ‘best’.

yugioh-athena

The reason I am so awed by Athena’s artwork is because of the glory and the sense of power that radiates from it. Not many Yugioh cards make me feel the sense power and grace than Athena. I really adore the pure white color of her clothes, skin, and hair. That along with the addition of silver really emphasizes are divinity. Also, I though that the red jewel on her trident was a good thing to add, otherwise the only colors on the card would be white and silver, and that would’ve made the art a little boring.

Yugioh Special Edition Tin: Creating a Yugioh Synchro Deck

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

For a while now, I have been looking to start a synchro deck. Synchros are one of the, if not the most popular type monsters out in the Yugioh world, so why not create a proto-deck with them? Plus, I was sick and tired of dueling my friends with my regular deck (and winning of course), so I also wanted to make a Yugioh synchro deck for the creative aspect. So while I was in Walmart today, I bought a Yugioh Special Edition Tin. The tin came with three Duelist Pack Yusei 2, one Ancient Prophecy, and three holofoil cards. Though I didn’t find any synchro monsters, I still got really nice cards.

A synchro deck cannot be sustained without having tuners. I may not have gotten any synchro monsters, I did find many tuners. I recieved two Hyper Synchrons, two Debris Dragons, a Sunny Pixie, an XX-Saber FullHelmKnight, and a Drill Synchron. I’m glad that I acquired Drill Syncrhon because now I’ll be able to summon Drill Warrior one of my favorite synchro monsters. Every turn, Drill Warrior can halve his attack points (2400) in order to attack directly. Plus, I can discard one card and Drill Warrior. On my next turn, Drill Warrior comes back to my side of the field and I can put one monster from my graveyard to my hand. That effect is very helpful when you’re trying to get back a monster that’s in your grave.

One top of my large amount of tuners, I also got a holofoil Tune Barrier, a trap card that allows one tuner on my side of the field to be safe from battle as well as from monster effects for two turns! It’s a good card to protect your tuners from your opponent during the times you’re waiting for tuning monster. Along with those tuners, I received a super rare Speed Warrior and a super rare Advance Draw. So all in all it was a great buy and the cards I received will be great additions to a synchro deck.

Of course, a synchro deck is nothing without synchros. Some synchros I have my eye on is Drill Synchron and Hyper Pyschic Blaster, as well its AM. If I do find a Hyper Pyschic Blaster, my deck would mainly be compiled of pyschic monsters and support cards for the, including a Prime Material Dragon if I can find one. Plus, I can still have a Drill Warrior in the deck. That’s a great thing about synchros. As long as you have the required tuner, synchros don’t need a deck theme to fit; they can virtually be useful in any deck. Based on my wants,  such as a need for Hyper Pyschic Blaster, can anyone reccomend me a deck list? I will add my own touches to the deck, but I’ve never made a synchro deck so I would really appreciate it if you guys could give ideas for a deck. Thanks!
