Surprising Results of the ‘Your Favorite Synchro Monster’ Poll

If you guys haven’t noticed yet, I recently put up a new poll on Yugioh Cards Blog inquiring about people’s favorite synchro monsters. The results were quite surprisingly actually; most people checked Red Nova Dragon as their favorite synchro monster. Though it’s  a strong monster, I don’t understand why Red [...]

Top 10 Tuner Monsters in Yugioh Part 1

As I was contemplating on what post to write, I figured I should write another top 10, since I haven’t written one for some time. Then I realized that though I have written a top 10 synchro monster list, I have never written a top 10 tuner monster list despite their dominance in Yugioh. So, here are (in my opinion) the top 10 tuner monsters in Yugioh:

10. Dark Resonator

For some reason, I have a huge fetish with the ‘Resonator’ tuners. One of my decks on Yugioh Online is a Resonator deck where I swarm Resonators on to the field and synchro summon powered monsters with them. Anyways, the reason Dark Resonator is on this list is because it is a pretty powerful low-leveled tuner with 1300 attack points. Plus, once per turn Dark Resonator can negate its destruction through battle. Its effect allows you to stall to find the right synchro material monster you need. Plus, a synchro monster who was summoned with Dark Resonator gains 300 attack points.

9. D.D. Sprite

With no attack points and 100 defense points, D.D. Sprite may not look like much but it is a great tuner monster. You can remove one monster on your side from the field and special D.D. Sprite. That is huge because if you haven’t normal summoned that turn, you can use your normal summon to bring out a monster you can use to synchro summon. Also, the monster you removed from play to special summon D.D. Sprite returns your next standby phase, so if D.D. Sprite is still alive, you can synchro summon it with the returning monster. This is a very efficient monster and is amazing in D.D. decks.

8. Plaguespreader Zombie

Just like D.D. Sprite, Plaguespreader Zombie can also special summon itself, but you have to return one card from your hand to the top of your deck. Like I mentioned with D.D. Sprite, this is great because if you have not used your normal you can use it to play a monster that you can use as a synchro material monster. The reason I like Plaguespreader Zombie better than D.D. Sprite is because you can easily normal summon level four monsters, which in turn allows you to bring out level six synchro monsters (most notably, Goyo Guardian).

7. Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind

Perhaps one of the best Blackwing tuners in the game, Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind just had to be on this list. It can special summon itself when there are one or more Blackwing monsters on the owner’s field. This allows for instantaneous synchro summoning capabilities, as Blackwing monsters are so good at swarming monsters onto the field. Gale also has 1300 attack points and once per turn, it can halve the attack and defense points of one monster on the field! That effect allows it to destroy any monster with 2600 or lower attack points.

6. Mist Valley Soldier

Mist Valley Soldier is a great tuner monster. Not only is it a level four tuner, which when tuned with a level four monster (the most common monster level) allows you to synchro summon powerful level eight synchro monsters. Mist Valley has a pretty good attack stat with 1700 attack points, but its effect is stellar. It can return a monster back to the owner’s hand if it is not destroyed by battle after battling Mist Valley Soldier. That allows you to return extremely powerful cards, such as the Yubels that are not destroyed by battle, back to their owner’s hand which is clutch if those monsters are throttling you.

Numbers 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 one will be revealed on part 2 of this list.

Exceed Monster Lockdown

Cards such as Gravity Bind and Level Limit Area – B do not not allow any monsters over level four from attacking. So I was thinking, couldn’t people use Exceed monsters to make those lockdowns broken? Here is my reasoning: Exceed monsters do not have levels, they have ranks. A rank is the average of the merger between two levels, so it is not qualified as a level. I’m not really familiar with a lot of Level Limit Area – B lockdowns but there are many Gravity Bind lockdowns, such as the Darkness Neosphere lockdown, that would be virtually unbreakable with Exceed monsters. Maybe that’s why Konami is making Exceed monsters a bit weaker than synchros, it’s because they add new aspects to the game like this one. What do you guys think?

Light End Dragon VS Dark End Dragon

Light versus darkness. In the movies, the good guys (light) always beat the villains (darkness). However, today we are going to see which of one of these two components are superior in Yugioh by comparing to monsters, Light End Dragon or Dark End Dragon.

1. Light End Dragon

Light End Dragon is a synchro monster that’s artwork is almost God-like. It’s statistics, with 2600 attack and 2100 defense points, as well its effect are not to shabby either. You can decrease Light End Dragon’s attack and defense points by 500 to decrease the attack and defense points of a monster it battles by 1500 defense points. That means it can destroy any monster who has 3600 or less attack points by battle!

Artwork: 10/10, Power: 8/10, Playability: 8/10, Deck Adaptation: 7/10, Effect: 6/10, Game Changer: 7/10. Light End Dragon overall score is 7.7/10 – C+.

2. Dark End Dragon

Dark End Dragon is another very good monster card and he’s been a great asset to my Dark Armed Dragon deck. Dark End Dragon has same 2600 attack and 2100 defense points as Light End Dragon. Its effect is somewhat similar as it can destroy one monster on your opponent’s side of the field by decreasing 500 of it attack and defense points.

Artwork: 7/10, Power: 8/10, Playability: 8/10, Deck Adaptation: 8/10 (since more people run dark oriented decks than light ones), Effect: 8/10, Game Changer: 8/10. Dark End Dragon’s overall score is 7.8/10 – C+ which means Dark End Dragon is the victor!

First Exceed Monster: No. 17 Revise Dragon

In my last post, I talked about the new type of monsters, exceed monsters, who will debut at the start of Yugioh Zexal. I wanted to talk about a particular exceed monster and show you a picture so you can see what exceed monsters look like.

This is No. 17 Revise Dragon and don’t worry, its weird name belies its strength. Revise Dragon is not only a pretty good statistical monster with 2000 attack, but it has a stellar effect as well. When an exceed monster is played, the exceed material monsters act as union monsters. Revise Dragon has the ability to gain five hundred attack points every time you remove one of its exceed material monsters it gains 500 attack points. The only downside to that effect is that if you remove both its exceed material monsters, though it will have 3000 attack points, it cannot attack directly. Still, No. 17 Revise Dragon is still a pretty good monster.

Exceed Summon VS. Synchro Summon

After Yugioh 5Ds concludes in episode 154, a new Yugioh series, Zexal, will be released. Just like Yugioh GX revolved around fusion summoning (contact fusion) and Yugioh 5Ds revolved around synchro summoning, Yugioh Zexal will revolve around a new type of summoning known as exceed summon. Once Yugioh Zexal comes out, do you guys think exceed summoning will make synchro summoning obsolete? Let’s compare the two forms of summoning in order to find out.

As you all know, a synchro summon occurs when there is one tuner monster and one or more non-tuner monsters. The player can then remove those monsters and play a synchro monster whose level equals the sum of the levels of the tuner and the non-tuner(s). Then, there is also Accel Synchro summoning, which requires a synchro tuner monster to tune with a regular synchro monster and Delta Synchro summon, which requires two regular synchro monsters and one tuner synchro.

An exceed summon is similar to a synchro summon and a contact fusion in the sense that it requires no spell card to proceed. An exceed summon is performed when there are two monsters with the same level on your side of the field; you can then summon an exceed monster whose Rank (which is the same thing as level) is equivalent to the level of the two Exceed material monsters.

I personally like exceed monsters in comparison to synchro monsters, because every deck can have one. With synchro monsters, you usually have to create a centralized deck in order to bring out tuners, modify levels, etc… in order to synchro summon. In short, I think exceed monsters are merely simpler than synchro monsters. That’s my opinion, but what do you guys think?

Delta Accel Synchro Summon

When Starstrike Blast came out, I had this fascination with Red Nova Dragon and its effect. Yesterday, for my cousin’s birthday, I bought him a Red Nova Dragon tin and together we built a deck out of the cards. He’s a pretty old school duelist so he wanted me to duel with his deck (and him with mine) just so he could learn some techniques and strategies. I was really giddy about dueling him with that deck because of the fact that Red Nova Dragon in it. Three turns passed, seven turns, then thirteen and he hit with the finishing blow. During the whole duel, I was not once able to bring out Red Nova Dragon because of its difficult summoning conditions. So I wandered, if accel synchro summoning is this difficult, how is delta accel synchro summoning even possible?

Delta accel sycnrho summoning is an even advanced form of synchro pioneered by Vizor/Antinomy (again). When one delta accel synchro summons they have to tune a tuner synchro monster with two or more non-tuner monsters. Wouldn’t that be almost impossible? Tech Genus monsters have the ability to swarm others into their hands, so people will probably utilize this archetype in the real world in order to rapidly play synchro monsters on the field in order to accel and delta accel synchro summon even stronger monsters. If that is the case, the Tech Genus archetype will be a very hard archetype to beat!

I do not see the point of introducing Delta Accel Synchro summoning. Sure it might benefit the Tech Genus archetype and make them strong but it is so hard to pull that those cards just seem like a waste! Plus, who likes saying,”I delta accel synchro summon Tech Genus Halberd Cannon!” What do you guys think, do you like Delta Accel Synchro summoning or do you think its bogus?

Underrated Yugioh Cards

Goyo Guardian, Dark Bribe, Monster Reborn, these are some of the several cards that duelists consider to be “top-notch.” Then there are cards like Cockroach Knight, Destructive Draw, and Mooyan Curry that make you wonder, “Why were these cards ever made?” However, what I love about Yugioh is that, although there’s a large population of cards everyone has to watch out for and cards people don’t even have to give a second glance, there is also a big population of less popular cards that are actually very helpful. These cards are essential to have in a good deck because they can just come out and bite the opponent; underrated cards.

If something is underrated, it’s not as bad as it is depicted to be. However, being underrated doesn’t necessarily mean you’re top-notch material also, which is commonly seen in sports. In Yugioh though, most underrated cards are actually really powerful. One of the cards I think deserves to be more commonly used and should be acknowledged is Magic Drain, which negates the activation of a spell card and destroys. Magic Drain’s effect can be negated if you’re opponent discards a card, so either, a spell card is going to the grave. That can be huge, especially in this generation of Yugioh, where level-controlling and tuner summoning cards are big.

Another card that isn’t very well known is Cold Wave. Those who have heard of it know its power, but not a lot of people seem to know of it. Cold Wave is a great spell to have especially if you play a beatdown deck. It “freezes” your and your opponent’s spell & trap card zone (can’t set or activate any spells and traps) starting form your Main Phase 1 to your next Main Phase 1. This is big because if your opponent can’t use their biggest defensive asset (traps, sometimes even spells) even for one turn, they are in trouble. It’s an average card to have in regular decks, but if you play a deck with lots of high attack monsters, Cold Wave is generates a lot of offensive opportunities.

There many cards that underrated but can provide great support for a deck. I think it’s incumbent for a good duelist to be able to classify less popular cards as efficient and not let them go to waste.

Life Stream Dragon – The Sixth Dragon

For all of you guys who follow Yugioh 5Ds, be prepared to be shocked because tomorrow, on episode 143, the dragon we have all been anticipating to see will be revealed: Life Stream Dragon! Before Crow was revealed to be signer and Black Wing Dragon was revealed to be the “fifth dragon,” Life Stream Dragon had produced many cults because everyone that it was the fifth dragon, and due to its resemblance with Power Tool Dragon, they thought Leo was the fifth signer. Well, their guesses proved to be true as Leo is the sixth signer and bears the heart of the Crimson Dragon.

In the anime, Life Stream Dragon is created when the Crimson Dragon gives Leo the power to evolves= Power Tool Dragon, however, what do you think its summoning conditions will be in the actual Yugioh card game? My guess is there’s going to be card called “Ancient Evolution” or something along the lines of that, which allows you to sync Power Tool Dragon and any tuner to synchro summon Life Stream Dragon. Based on its name, I suspect Life Stream Dragon is going to have an awesome life point regeneration effect, probably something along the lines of when this monster is synchro summoned, the user gains life points equal to the attack points of the strongest monster on your opponent’s side of the field. When this monster destroys an opposing monster, your opponent loses life points equal to half the destroyed monster’s attack points and you gain those life points.

I was actually pretty surprised to hear Leo was a signer because in the anime, the legend says that there were only five signers. Maybe Leo and Luna count as one signer, who knows? Another question that’s nagging my mind about Life Stream Dragon is, after it fought with the Earthbound Gods, how did it become mechanical (Power Tool Dragon)? Hopefully those questions will be answered in the upcoming episodes. Either way, Life Stream Dragon is going to be one heck of a monster!
