The Evolution of Yugioh Dueling Mechanisms

The way characters have dueled since the creation of the original Yugioh series as evolved a lot. From duel boxes to d-gazers, every new season seems to introduce a new dueling mechanism. Here is a timeline of duel mechanisms that Yugioh characters have utilized throughout the history of the show.

1. Duel Ring

The duel ring was a large table-like machine that has place holders for cards. There is an area for two players’ graveyards, field spell zones, and 10 card zones: five for their spell/trap cards and the other five for monster cards. The duel ring was also the first mechanism that allowed duel monster cards to be viewed holographically. Because of this, the duel ring was a pioneering technology in the Yugioh series.

2. Duel Disk

Though it was created late in the Duelist Kingdom arc, the duel disk becomes the primary way of dueling for the rest of the original Yugioh series as well as the Yugioh GX series. Its functionality is the same as a duel ring, except it is portable. Personally, duel disks are my favorite dueling mechanism due to its sleek design.

3. Duel Runner

Perhaps the most advanced dueling technology, the duel runner is the primary dueling mechanism in Yugioh 5Ds. It is basically a bike with duel disk technology incorporated within it. One can even put the duel runner in autopilot so that they can focus completely on dueling. Duel runners can also go to very fast speeds, making the duel extremely fun and exhilarating.

4. D-Gazer

The d-gazer is an eye tool introduced in Yugioh ZEXAL that allows the user to view the duel in 3D when used with a duel pad, which is another sleek form of the duel ring. Besides allowing 3D view-ability, the d-gazer allows the user to mess around with their surroundings as well, similar to a virtual simulator.

Delta Accel Synchro Summon

When Starstrike Blast came out, I had this fascination with Red Nova Dragon and its effect. Yesterday, for my cousin’s birthday, I bought him a Red Nova Dragon tin and together we built a deck out of the cards. He’s a pretty old school duelist so he wanted me to duel with his deck (and him with mine) just so he could learn some techniques and strategies. I was really giddy about dueling him with that deck because of the fact that Red Nova Dragon in it. Three turns passed, seven turns, then thirteen and he hit with the finishing blow. During the whole duel, I was not once able to bring out Red Nova Dragon because of its difficult summoning conditions. So I wandered, if accel synchro summoning is this difficult, how is delta accel synchro summoning even possible?

Delta accel sycnrho summoning is an even advanced form of synchro pioneered by Vizor/Antinomy (again). When one delta accel synchro summons they have to tune a tuner synchro monster with two or more non-tuner monsters. Wouldn’t that be almost impossible? Tech Genus monsters have the ability to swarm others into their hands, so people will probably utilize this archetype in the real world in order to rapidly play synchro monsters on the field in order to accel and delta accel synchro summon even stronger monsters. If that is the case, the Tech Genus archetype will be a very hard archetype to beat!

I do not see the point of introducing Delta Accel Synchro summoning. Sure it might benefit the Tech Genus archetype and make them strong but it is so hard to pull that those cards just seem like a waste! Plus, who likes saying,”I delta accel synchro summon Tech Genus Halberd Cannon!” What do you guys think, do you like Delta Accel Synchro summoning or do you think its bogus?

My Idea For a Yugioh Video Game

Yugioh video games are relatively fun; in the old Yugioh World Championship games, all you’d do is duel and collect cards, solve tough duel puzzles, etc… After the release of Yugioh Stardust Accelerator and Reverse of Arcadia, players actually followed a specific storyline and could even duel in duel runners! The game, Yugioh 5Ds Wheelie Breakers is a very fun racing game that utilizes monsters/spells/traps as ways of slowing down your opponent(s), similar to Mario Kart. Now, what if there was a Yugioh video game that combined the racing aspects of Wheelie Breakers, the RPG aspects of Yugioh Stardust Acceleration/Reverse of Arcadia, and merged it into an epic 3D game for the three major consoles? I bet it would be the greatest Yugioh game ever created.

This game (I would want it to be named Yugioh: Duelists Origins) would follow an alternate Yugioh storyline that starts after the Dark Signers are defeated. The main player lives in an alleyway in New Domino City as a renown technician throughout the black market. Yusei and co. are introduced to the player through Rally in order to upgrade their duel runners and the player is welcomed to their group. There would be some filler missions here and there but the main storyline would be about (illegal) underground duel racing and how a group of mobsters challenge Yusei and co. and the player in duel races. Soon, the hobby spirals out of the control and Yusei and co. and the player have to fight the mobsters for their lives.

Duelist Origins would be like Assassin’s Creed/Grand Theft Auto minus the violence and other suggestive themes. You would be able to create an avatar and follow a set storyline. However, players can upgrade their duel runners by going into various shops in New Domino City (each shop sells and upgrades different parts), obtain new cards by winning local tournaments, make money by doing missions for commoners or by partaking in duel races, and enter super-stardom by winning big tournaments. The best part is that all the while, players would be able to roam (yes, even ride their duel runners) freely around New Domino City! And if the player is causing too much havoc, a duel race occurs between Trudge and the player occurs. Trudge’s difficulty increases after each encounter and if the player loses, they have to give Trudge half of their savings.

This game is too good to be true, but if something like this did come into the market, I’d be the first person to buy it. As much as I love the Yugioh games that are already out, they get boring since all you do is duel! If you are familiar with the Naruto series, the early Naruto games were just about fighting, but once games such as Naruto Rise of the Ninja and Naruto Ultimate Ninja came out, players could enjoy fighting people and roaming around Konoha. As a result, the Naruto franchise’s sales rose immensely.

Do you guys like Yugioh: Duelist Origins? What are some of your ideas for a new Yugioh game?

Yugioh Network is a really cool site where you can create your own deck and duel with others. It’s really intriguing because you have virtually all the cards created in Yugioh so you can experiment various decks in the site. I’ve talked about Yugioh Network in detail in a previous post, so if you want to learn more about Yugioh Network, read that. In the meantime, I just wanted everyone to see a video of a duel in Yugioh Network. It truly is a really cool site and I recommend everyone get a Yugioh Network account so we can all duel together!

Top 5 Yugioh Monster Archetypes Part 1

In Yugioh Cards Blog, the discussions about the strongest Yugioh archetypes have getting very popular. Therefore, I decided to write a post on the top 5 archetypes in Yugioh. Before I start, I want to remind you that these are based on TCG deck lists. Here is part 1 of the list.

5. Dark World

Strengths

Though they are heavily looked down upon, Dark World monsters are actually one of the best types of cards to use. They are, in my opinion, the more advanced versions of Blackwings. Dark World monsters revolve around the activation of effects after being discarded. For example; Beiige, Vanguard of the Dark World can be special summoned if it is discarded from your hand by a card effect. The Dark World monsters really punish mill archetypes, and other archetypes that like to discard cards from the foe’s hand; a popular archetype being the X-Sabers. Dark World is also a great swarming archetype especially with effect of Brron, Mad King of the Dark World. The Dark World archetype also goes great with the Infernity archetype, creating a nearly unbeatable deck (I would know, since I used a mixture of Dark World and Infernity and made it to nationals).

Weaknesses

The only weakness I noticed in a Dark World deck is that it is hard to function if you don’t draw a card discarder, such as a Morphing Jar. Unless you can activate their effects, Dark World monsters are pretty weak so a lot of the Dark World archetype is based on luck. Also, Dark World decks can be a bit predictable, so you need to have a strong extra deck.

4. Blackwings

Strengths

One of the best OTK decks around, Blackwing monsters are one of the, if not the most used archetype in Yugioh duels. With their versatility and vast swarming capabilities, Blackwings could create obstacles for your opponent early in the turn. Cards like Sirocco the Dawn also help out by improving the attack stat of other Blackwings. One of the most dangerous attributes about Blackwings is how quickly they can create an OTK. Because Blackwings swarm so much, they can quickly create OTK situations or quick-kill situations. The difficulty of preparing for those types of situations makes Blackwing monsters very deadly. Because of their swarming prowess, Blackwings also focus on summoning many synchro monsters.

Weaknesses

Blackwing monsters are a very one-dimensional archetype. Besides the fact they swarm to create OTK situations, they aren’t really capable of doing anything else. Plus, the fact they are all winged-beast, dark attribute monsters, means that you can easily defeat them with Tribe-Infecting virus or Consecrated Light. Also, because Blackwing decks focus on swarming synchros, cards like Gravity Bind make it very difficult for a Blackwing deck to function.

I hoped you guys like part 1 of the Top 5 Yugioh Deck Archetypes, tune in for my next post to see my 3rd and 4th entries, although they are pretty obvious!

Card of the Week

In a recent comment, I received a very interesting idea from nader. He proposed that I should have “Card of the Week” post every week. Because booster packs aren’t released every week, I decided that the card of the week would be card that really helped me out in a duel (real or in a game) or a card that rose in popularity. Then, every month, you all can vote on which card you think is the best, and that card will win the “Card of the Month” award. I would like to thank nader for this idea because I think it is a great addition to this site!

Yugioh Defensive Monsters

In Yugioh duels, having monsters with a high attack and broken burn effects will not guarantee victory. A simple Mirror Force or Magic Cylinder can break your momentum and change the outcome of the duel instantly. Therefore, just like in basketball or football, every good deck needs a strong defense in order to protect your life points in case of an emergency. I have already talked about Yugioh trap cards and Yugioh spell cards that are a great defensive addition to your deck. In this post, I will talk about key defensive monsters that can stall the duel for you in order to set up a combo to facilitate a come-back.

Top 15 Strong and Easy to Summon Monsters Part 3

Here is part three of the list:

5. Dark Armed Dragon

Dark Armed Dragon is equivalent to the Lebron James of Yugioh. It’s a great card, very powerful, over-hyped sometimes but a great addition to any deck. Dark Armed Dragon is just too easy play, especially in dark attribute decks (the most commonly used decks in Yugioh). All it takes to summon D.A.D. is to have three dark monsters in your graveyard, which is a simple task which can be made even easier with a Graceful Charity or a Card Destruction. D.A.D. has a pretty sweet effect as well: by removing one dark monster from your graveyard, it can destroy any card on the field. That’s not only a great effect for clearing the field for direct attacks, but you can also use D.A.D’s to get rid of your opponent’s suspicious and dangerous traps. D.A.D. seems like a killer, but it has a big weakness: remove all the dark monsters from your foe’s grave, and it’s mightily weakened. This can be easily done with a Soul Release; that’s why it should become the basis of any Anti-DAD deck.

4. Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning

Black Luster Soldier EOTB is obviously the powerhouse monster of Yugioh. It’s fairly easy to summon; all you have to do is remove a light and dark monster from your graveyard. It can destroy one monster per turn through it’s effect, opening up attacking space for other monsters. When Black Luster Soldier, EOTB destroys a monster, it can attack again. That’s a strong effect considering that it could then wipe out your opponent’s field of monsters. That effect allows EOTB and the rest if your platoon of monsters to attack your foe directly and deal some serious damage. Just like DAD however, you can easily prevent the summoning of EOTB with cards like Soul Release,

3. Gorz Emissary of Darkness

Gorz is probably the easiest to summon in this list. All your opponent has to do is deal damage to you; even a dealing a mere 50 life points would cause Gorz to be special summoned. Not only can Gorz, a strong monster with 2700 attack points, arrive to the duel, he would bring this mates token one and token two as well. If your foe inflicts battle damage to you, when Gorz is played you can also summon two tokens with attack and defense equal to the amount of damage taken. Gorz’s tokens are great as tributes, as offensive monsters, and even synchro material monsters for a synchro monster. You could tune a Alien Ammonite with a Gorz token to synchro summon Black Winged Dragon! If your opponent inflicts effect damage to you however, Gorz is still summoned but you deal the same amount of damage you took back to your opponent rather than special summoning tokens. Gorz is just a fantastic card and I’m glad that he is easily findable at your local stores!

2. Stardust Dragon

Dragons were only known to be the strongest type of monsters but until Tyrant Dragon and Decoy Dragon, I haven’t seen as good of a defensive dragon as Stardust. With 2500 attack points, it can kill you in offense, but with its effect, it can save your butt on the defensive side. If your opponent activates a spell, trap, or monster effect during a crucial moment for you in the duel, no worries. All you have to do is remove Stardust Dragon from play and boom, your foe’s card’s effect is negated and the card is destroyed! The best part is, Stardust Dragon comes back for more at the end of the turn. Unlike EOTB or DAD, it’s very difficult to destroy Stardust Dragon. It’s basically impossible to destroy it by a card effect, and it’s very tough to be beat it in battle. Stardust Dragon is also a synchro monster, making it fairly easy to play as well. This dragon is surely a God.

For a deck to be unique, you need to have to have a theme to it, or a battle style. I have compiled a list of styles, each one has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. Many of these styles are used by characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh show.
